Tasty Tuesday: Kale Chips

with No Comments

I have been wanting to make Kale Chips since my roommate made some last year. I finally got around to it over the weekend and they did not last long in my house. I searched the internet for some yummy recipes and tips before setting out for the grocery store. I followed the basic recipe found here.

I had read that it was important the kale be completely dry before putting them in the oven or they would be wilty kale chips and nobody wants that. I read everything from using a salad spinner to blow drying the kale in a bowl. I tried laying out the kale on cooling racks and that seemed to work quite well. I washed the kale before going out and running some errands so the kale was totally dry by the time I got home.

All the recipes online were pretty basic with salt and pepper. I wanted to make something a little bit more fun but I’m terrible at mixing spices so I picked up some spice blends at Safeway to put on the chips. I decided to make 3 batches to test out all the blends (garam masala, Mrs. Dash – Garlic & Herb, Lemon & Pepper).

Cooking Time
OhSheGlows
recommended baking the chips at 300F for 25 min total, rotating the pan halfway. I tried out three different cooking times:

  1. 300F for 25 min: in my oven this left the chips tasting a little burnt
  2. 300F for 20 min: I rotated the tray halfway away and the chips turned out better but still a little over crispy
  3. 300F for 18 min: this seems to be the magic time in my oven. The chips seemed a little under done when I took them out of the oven but after cooling they are perfect!
